STPA Students Win Sixth Place at National Chess Scholastic Tournament

EDINBURG – The chess team of South Texas Preparatory Academy (STPA) placed at the 2012 U.S. Chess Federation National K-12 Scholastic Chess Championships, held in Orlando, Florida from November 29 - December 2.
The STPA Chess Team, made up of eight students, was one of 494 teams from 37 states who competed at the national level. After seven intense rounds, the team finished sixth place in both seventh grade and eighth grade divisions.
In individual event, Michael Reyes and Ayodeji Ogunlana, both of Mission, took first and second places respectively in the K-8 Championship U-1200 category.
Johan Temkin and Arush Shekar, both of McAllen, placed first and second places respectively in the unrated category. Johan Temkin also placed second in the unrated category of Grades 6-12 blitz competition.
Alex Comple, an STPA history instructor and sponsor of the STPA Chess Club, teamed with Johan Temkin, and the pair received first place in the Coach & Student division of the Parent & Friend Combined category.
Emmanuel Iwuala of Mission, Jan Paulo Lamsis of McAllen, Cristobal Mu¬¬niz of Mission, and Manuel Munoz of Mission are other STPA students who also competed at nationals.
