July 19th- July 24th, 2020

South Texas ISD and UTRGV P-16 Outreach would like to invite you to apply for a role as a junior camp counselor for this summer’s STPA STEM Camp 2020. A junior camp counselor’s main purpose is to interact with students and participate in activities that are designed to increase the academic success of the camp participants.

The camp is a one-week, academic, residential camp that emphasizes increasing students’ mathematics and science skills while introducing them to college life and stimulating their interest in science and engineering as a potential career path. 

Camp dates will be July 19th-24th, 2020.

Junior camp counselors will work with senior camp counselors and camp staff to supervise rising 7th grade students for the camp’s duration. Duties will include the following:

• Attend junior camp counselor mandatory training and meetings;
• Supervise students during meals, breaks and various activities;
• Make announcements concerning any changes to schedules;
• Assist monitoring students’ behavior and report any issues to the camp coordinator;
• Support and uphold established policies and procedures, including safety rules and student rules;
• Serve as a positive role model, mentor and tutor for campers;
• Adapt to a flexible weekend schedule and availability; and
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Junior camp counselors will have the option to stay on or off campus for the duration of the camp. Junior camp counselors will receive free housing on campus, free meals and a stipend from STISD as compensation for the training, activities and duties completed before and during the camp.

This application will be available until March 2, 2020 and must be completed in one submission, you will not be able to save and return to this application.  It is recommended that you have completed the essay prior to submission so that you may copy and paste your essay onto this application. Essay Instructions: A student essay must be included with this application. The essay is not to exceed 250 words.

Why do you feel you are a good candidate for our program? Make sure to include why you are interested in serving as a junior camp counselor and how your experience as a camper has impacted your decision to go to college and pursue a career in the stem field.

Additionally, the application will require digital signatures from student and parent.
